According to CoinMeta, the upper stage of Falcon 9, SpaceX, is expected to impact the Moon on August 5th, potentially creating a new crater and providing scientists with rare observational data. The impact is scheduled for around 6:35 Coordinated Universal Time, near the Einstein Crater. The object is an abandoned second-stage rocket from Falcon 9, which has been in orbit around the Earth-Moon system since January 2025. On January 15, 2025, SpaceX used this rocket to launch the Blue Ghost and Resilience landers. The rocket stage is about 40 feet long and is expected to hit the Moon at a speed of approximately 5,400 miles per hour. The impact will release energy equivalent to several tons of TNT, and it is possible that a crater about 90 feet wide and 16 feet deep will be formed. Computer models indicate that the impact may eject lunar material up to 15 to 20 kilometers into the air, and dust may spread over an area of more than 180 kilometers around the impact site. NASA's lunar explorer orbiter and South Korea's Danuri spacecraft are expected to collect images before and after the impact to measure the crater and track the displaced material.
