Wells Fargo joins JPMorgan Chase and Citibank in launching tokenized deposit services
2026-08-04 23:53:53
According to CoinMeta, Wells Fargo ( WFC ) will offer tokenized deposits to certain corporate and business customers later this year, with the initial support for 24/7 trading in US dollars and British pounds, based on its proprietary blockchain. The bank stated that in the future, it will enable 24/7 settlement and programmable payments, while maintaining consistency with existing deposit protections. Once fully deployed, the system will allow customers to move, program, and settle funds around the clock. The initial rollout will be expanded to more customers, countries, and currencies, with completion expected by 2027. Tokenized deposits represent the representation of traditional bank balances on a blockchain. Unlike stablecoins, they remain commercial bank money, and Wells Fargo indicates that they will enjoy the same regulatory protections and deposit insurance qualifications as existing deposit products. Future features will include conditional payments using smart contracts.
