Senior members of Japan's Liberal Democratic Party: Central Bank's ETF holdings may help provide funds for tax cuts

According to CoinMeta, a senior official from Japan's ruling Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) stated that utilizing the holdings of the Bank of Japan (BOJ) could be one option for financing the planned reduction in the consumption tax. This indicates that the BOJ's substantial asset holdings may become a political focal point. Despite growing concerns about Japan's already strained fiscal situation, the government persists in pushing forward with the plan to lower the food consumption tax. Daisiro Yamagata, the chairman of the LDP's Tax System Investigation Committee and a veteran lawmaker, suggested that selling the profits from the BOJ's 37 trillion yen holdings could be considered as one of the solutions to fill the tax gap. According to a plan established last September, the BOJ is currently selling its holdings at a rate of about 330 billion yen per year in the market.
