According to CoinMeta, a couple from Connecticut discovered an unexpected lien on their property because someone used forged identification to obtain a nearly $250,000 home equity loan in their name. The police tracked down the suspect, Katija Hussain, 27 years old, from Oxon Hill in Maryland, who is suspected of using a forged Connecticut driver's license to impersonate the victims. After a lengthy investigation, the police confirmed her identity. She was extradited to Connecticut for identity theft and conspiracy charges, and a bail of $750,000 was set by the judge; she is expected to appear in court later this month. This case highlights how identity thieves target real estate records to extract assets without the homeowners' consent. Investigators are still checking whether there are any other accomplices involved in this case.
