According to CoinMeta, the latest report by SemiAnalysis indicates that Google’s DeepMind is no longer at the forefront of AI research and development. The likelihood of it regaining that position in the future has dropped to zero. The report suggests that DeepMind is losing top-tier talent and computing power, with Jeff Dean, Sanjay Ghemawat, Quoc Le, and Oriol Vinyals recently leaving Google to start their own businesses. Previously, Gemini’s co-head Noam Shazeer has switched to OpenAI, and Nobel laureate John Jumper has joined Anthropic. A large portion of the computing power has also been sold to competitors. SemiAnalysis estimates that from the third quarter of 2026 to the fourth quarter of 2027, over 20% of TPU will be sold directly to Anthropic, effectively locking a significant amount of scarce computing power away from Gemini’s rivals for the long term. The report attributes these issues to Google’s “bureaucratic, slow, and strategically conservative” organizational culture, and compares today’s Google to IBM and Intel: its technical capabilities are still strong, but the most challenging and risky technological competitions may no longer be the company’s top priority.
