According to CoinMeta, and as reported by Reuters, non-farm employment in the United States unexpectedly decreased by 23,000 in July, far below the market's expectation of an increase of 80,000. The job creation data for the previous two months was also significantly revised downward, with the unemployment rate falling from 4.2% to 4.1%, mainly due to some workers withdrawing from the labor market. Following the release of the data, market expectations for a Federal Reserve interest rate hike in September declined. CME FedWatch shows that the probability of a hike dropped from 55% on the previous trading day to about 44%. Coupled with the decline in oil prices and the impact of corporate earnings reports, the three major U.S. stock indices closed higher: the S&P 500 rose 0.62% to record new highs, the Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 0.28%, and the Nasdaq Composite Index rose 1.30%. During that week, the S&P 500, Dow Jones, and Nasdaq Composite Indexes rose by 3.58%, 2.96%, and 5.19%, respectively. As of the morning of August 7th, among the 436 S&P 500 companies that had released their earnings reports, 85.1% exceeded analysts' expectations, which is higher than the average level of 68% since 1994.
