According to CoinMeta, as reported by A in early 2021, a vulnerability in the wallet firmware led to the theft of approximately 2,000 BTC coins, resulting in a loss of around $130 million. Following the incident, there was a net inflow of about $626 million into the US spot Bitcoin market within a few days. Bloomberg analyst ETF stated that the security incident prompted funds to flow towards ETF. Jameson Lopp, co-founder of Casa, pointed out that third-party hosting carries risks. Early developer Peter Todd believes that self-hosting has a better security record than centralized institutions. Michael Tanguma, co-founder of Onramp, proposed a multi-institution hosting solution, which sparked debates regarding the concept of decentralization.
