According to CoinMeta, a man from California named William Lee (William Ly) is suspected of stealing nearly $100,000 from an 89-year-old retired person's cryptocurrency account through multiple unauthorized transfers. Lee established a friendship with the victim at a local retirees' breakfast club and reset the password to the victim's bank-linked (Coinbase) account. The police stated that this friendship lasted from June 2024 to September 2025 until the victim realized they had lost tens of thousands of dollars. Detectives from the Ventura County Sheriff's Office began investigating the case in November 2025 following a report of financial theft involving an elderly victim. Investigators found that over 80 cryptocurrency transactions totaling more than $97,000 were conducted within 15 months. The police traced the stolen funds to Lee's account and digital wallet. Lee was arrested on August 4 for alleged financial abuse of the elderly, grand theft, and identity theft. After months of investigation in collaboration with the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and the Ventura County Fraud Working Group, investigators suspect that there may be other victims and are urging anyone with similar experiences to come forward and provide information.
