Vanguard VCLT vs Schwab SCHQ: Long-term Bond ETF Investment Options

According to CoinMeta, Vanguard's long-term corporate bonds ETF ( NASDAQ : VCLT ) focus on high-quality corporate debt, while Schwab's long-term U.S. Treasury bonds ETF ( NYSEMKT : SCHQ ) aim for the safety of government-backed debt, resulting in different yield and risk characteristics. Both funds are intended to provide income by investing in long-term debt. Although their duration risks are similar, the choice often depends on investors' preferences for corporate bond credit premiums and their perception of the safety of U.S. Treasury bonds. VCLT currently offers higher dividends, reflecting investors' demand for additional returns from holding corporate credit. VCLT holds 2,854 positions, mainly consisting of high-quality investment-grade corporate debt with maturities ranging from 10 to 25 years. In contrast, SCHQ holds only 100 U.S. Treasury bonds, each payment of which is backed by the federal government, with zero credit risk. For investors seeking a pure government-backed alternative, SCHQ is a better choice.
