Institutional investors sold $21.6 billion in NASDAQ futures in a single week, shifting their positions to net short positions

According to CoinMeta, as reported by The Kobeissi Letter, as of the week ending August 4th, institutional investors sold a total of $21.6 billion in NASDAQ futures, setting a new record for the largest single-week sell-off in history. Among this, short-selling transactions accounted for 72% of the total sales. Hedge funds sold $11.9 billion, and asset management firms sold $7.4 billion. Institutional investors' overall position in NASDAQ futures dropped to -$5 billion, marking the first time it has turned negative since May 2025, whereas in October 2025, that figure reached $54 billion.
