KaiTou Macro: South Korea's semiconductor boom may cool down within two years
2026-08-13 10:16:54
According to CoinMeta, economist Marcel Thieliant from Kaite Macroeconomics stated that although South Korea’s GDP growth faces upward risks in the short term, the semiconductor-driven prosperity of the Korean economy may lose momentum over the next two years. He predicts that the boom in artificial intelligence investment in the United States will cool down by 2028, which could prompt South Korean chip manufacturers to start cutting back on capital expenditures due to the highly cyclical nature of the semiconductor industry. Thieliant noted that Samsung Electronics and SK SK Hynix have announced an investment plan totaling 800 trillion Korean won to build new chip manufacturing facilities in southwestern South Korea, but the specific timeline for the investments has not yet been disclosed. He also mentioned that in 2023, as the post-pandemic boom in electronics products reversed, SK SK Hynix cut its capital expenditures by two-thirds.
