IMF Loan Conditions Enrage Kiev; Central Bank Governor Zelensky Becomes the Scapegoat
2026-08-13 17:25:28
According to CoinMeta, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky is increasingly dissatisfied with the central bank governor Andrii Pyshnyi, believing that he has too close a relationship with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and that he has not provided sufficient economic support during the war. It is reported that IMF has imposed a series of unpopular conditions as prerequisites for providing loans to Kiev, which has angered Zelensky. Pyshnyi is accused of having a harmonious relationship with this Washington-based lending institution, which has become a focal point of the president's dissatisfaction. Sources familiar with the matter say that Zelensky does not intend to replace Pyshnyi at least for now, and also believes that there is no strong candidate available to lead the central bank. The tension between Zelensky and IMF began last winter when the institution approved a $8.1 billion loan plan for Ukraine, which required the government to make key commitments, including tax increases, and this was met with sharp criticism from Ukrainian lawmakers and many ordinary citizens.
