SEC Cancels Encrypted Voting, CFTC Sets New Regulatory Agenda

According to CoinMeta, the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) canceled a meeting scheduled for August 14th, which was supposed to decide whether to formally propose customized regulatory schemes for crypto products, on the grounds of "unforeseeable scheduling issues." Six days later, the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) will hold an innovation conference titled "Evolution of Crypto Regulation: From Uncertainty to Clarity" to discuss digital assets, automated trading agents, and predictive markets. The CFTC meeting is not intended to enact new crypto laws; instead, it is scheduled to vote on proposed rules for certain investment contracts and to initiate a formal public comment process. The specific rules have not yet been announced. Reuters reports that this initiative may create exemptions that would allow eligible crypto startups to raise funds without immediately complying with the traditional securities registration framework. SEC Chair Paul Atkins has previously discussed the concept of safe harbors and more targeted exemptions for digital asset companies. Therefore, the cancellation of the meeting has postponed the start of rule-making, rather than rejecting the policy altogether.
