In the past, the American defense industry added advanced guidance systems and propulsion systems to missiles, resulting in a price of over $4 million per unit and a production cycle that lasted for several years. The Pentagon is demanding that companies "change, or they will be eliminated," hoping to deal with cheap threats such as drones at a lower cost. Lockheed has launched a cheaper version of the interceptor, with a cost of only about $2 million per unit, which is less than half of the enhanced versions. Boeing is developing "ultra-low cost" guidance systems, and Northrop has introduced the Raider system. Raytheon is expanding the application of its low-cost anti-drone missile, the Wolverine. The US Army stated that not all targets require the most advanced and expensive interception systems, but most low-cost solutions still take several years to reach mass production.
