Hong Kong Police: Over 20,000 fraud cases in the first half of 2026, involving losses of approximately HK$3.5 billion

According to CoinMeta and reports from Ming Pao, the Hong Kong police announced that in the first half of 2026, a total of 20,613 fraud cases were recorded in Hong Kong, involving losses of approximately HK$3.5 billion. Among these, there were 2,151 investment fraud cases, which accounted for about one-tenth of the total cases and involved losses of around HK$1.65 billion. The most significant case involved cryptocurrencies, where the victim transferred approximately HK$84.79 million in crypto assets to the scammer's designated electronic wallet, only to realize they had been deceived later on when they were unable to withdraw the so-called investment returns. The Hong Kong police also updated the progress of the jpex case, stating that they have received reports from about 2,800 victims, with losses exceeding HK$1.6 billion. Since 2023, a total of 81 people have been arrested, among whom 29 have been prosecuted for charges such as conspiracy to commit fraud, money laundering, and obstruction of justice.
