OpenAI Signs Lease for Large Data Center in Ohio, Receives Support from NVIDIA

According to CoinMeta, OpenAI has signed a 10-gigawatt data center agreement in Ohio with SB Energy, a subsidiary of SoftBank, and has received support from NVIDIA. The agreement aims to help OpenAI raise debt financing while avoiding NVIDIA from taking on significant risks. NVIDIA agrees to provide a guarantee for part of the value of the completed data center, starting from the first phase (about 5 gigawatts of power). In return, NVIDIA will become the exclusive chip supplier for the first half of the project in Ohio and will hold equity in SB Energy. NVIDIA has the option to extend the guarantee to the entire campus in later stages. Sources familiar with the matter say that NVIDIA's support is intended to make the project financing more convenient and less costly. Even if OpenAI is no longer a tenant, NVIDIA's guarantee will enhance lenders' confidence in the data center's value preservation. By guaranteeing the asset value of the data center rather than the continuous rental payments from OpenAI, this commitment structure significantly limits NVIDIA's risk exposure.
