Sumitomo Mitsui expects the Bank of Japan to accelerate its interest rate hike pace

According to CoinMeta, Kenetsu Goshui, co-head of Sumitomo Mitsui's Global Markets Department, also stated that the Bank of Japan (BOJ) could raise interest rates again as early as September and may increase the frequency of policy adjustments from once every six months to once every three months. He pointed out that the weak yen and inflationary pressures are driving the BOJ to act more quickly, and he does not rule out raising rates twice before the end of this year to bring the policy interest rate to 1.5%. Currently, the market estimates a 78% probability of a rate hike by the BOJ on September 18th. Goshui also mentioned that Sumitomo Mitsui will continue to adopt a conservative investment strategy for Japanese government bonds, focusing only on inflation-linked bonds and short-term government bonds. Although the yield on 10-year Japanese bonds has risen to a 30-year high, it is still lower than Japan's nominal economic growth rate of around 4%. He believes that global structural changes and investment growth may further push up Japan's neutral interest rate, while inflation risks remain on the upside. Goshui stated that the joint intervention by the US and Japan reflects their desire not to see the yen continue to depreciate, but the weakness of the yen is partly due to Japan's loose monetary policy. He expects the Japanese economy to be undergoing an important transformation for several decades, and the Japanese stock market remains attractive, although financial market volatility may intensify.
