OpenAI Expands Codex from a programming tool into a general-purpose Agent engine
2026-08-20 14:14:22
According to CoinMeta, OpenAI has begun to push Codex from a programming tool to a broader range of Agent scenarios. Developers can directly integrate the Agent operating system behind Codex into their own software for use in customer service, operations, security, research, and other tasks, without being limited to just writing code and using development tools. This system, named Codex Harness, has long been open-source. OpenAI demonstrated a logistics backend where, in the event of an abnormal order, Codex will automatically check data, call enterprise tools, compare processing options, and only allow manual confirmation when actually modifying the order. The entire process occurs directly within the business software; users do not need to open Codex or engage in separate conversations with chatbots.
