The US Internal Revenue Service warns cryptocurrency holders not to scan QR codes from fraudulent emails

According to CoinMeta, the United States Internal Revenue Service (IRS) has warned that cryptocurrency holders may recently receive fraudulent emails that appear to be official. These emails direct recipients to visit fake websites with domain names such as “digital asset compliance portal”. The emails contain QR codes that, when scanned, lead to counterfeit IRS websites. These sites may attempt to obtain personal information, wallet details, exchange account credentials, or other sensitive data from users. The IRS asserts that it does not operate any platform with the names “digital asset compliance portal” and has not sent such emails. It has been reported that the infrastructure behind these scams has been traced back to a domain name that was recently registered and hosted in Romania. If you receive such emails, please do not scan the QR codes or provide any information.
