U.S. housing affordability indicators have deteriorated for the first time in nearly three years

According to CoinMeta, amid the pressure of high mortgage rates, the affordability of housing in the United States has deteriorated for the first time in nearly three years. Data released by the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB) and Wells Fargo show that in the second quarter of this year, for a home with a median price of $410,700, the monthly mortgage payment accounted for 34% of a typical family's income, up from 32% in the first quarter. This ratio reverses some of the improvements in housing affordability since the beginning of 2025. During the second quarter, the US-Iran war drove up borrowing costs, with 30-year mortgage rates soaring to around 6.8%, near their highest level in a year. At the same time, the median price of new homes increased by 2%, further exacerbating the pressure to buy a home.
