WSJ In-depth Review: Behind the Rise of China's AI, There Is a Chain of Talents from Tsinghua University

According to CoinMeta, in reviewing the rise of AI in China, they noticed a talent chain from Tsinghua University that has continued for many years. Tang Jie, the founder of Zhipu, and Yang Zhilin, the founder of Yuezhi Anmian, were teacher and student at Tsinghua University over a decade ago. Tang Jie once guided Yang Zhilin in his research on machine learning and recommended him to compete for Tsinghua's highest academic award. Today, the two have founded Zhipu and Yuezhi Anmian respectively, becoming representatives of model entrepreneurship in China. Tang Jie has been researching machine learning for about 25 years. Over the past twenty-plus years, Chinese universities have cultivated a large number of computer talents, and in the internet era, a wealth of data and engineering experience has been accumulated. Some researchers, after working at American tech companies, returned to China to start their own businesses, connecting academic research with commercialization. In the early stages, Tang Jie focused on AGI; in 2019, he commercialized the technology from Tsinghua University's laboratory, founded Zhipu, and bet on large-scale models. The approach taken by Chinese AI companies to catch up is different from that of American giants. Due to limitations in chips and funding, it is difficult to replicate the high-investment paths of OpenAI and Anthropic; therefore, they can only seek breakthroughs in algorithm efficiency and engineering optimization. In the past few years, the competition among Chinese AI companies has seemingly been a race of models, but in reality, it is a manifestation of talent accumulation.
