According to CoinMeta, and as reported by foreign media, the US Navy is testing a new type of air-to-air missile that is capable of striking targets over 290 miles (465 kilometers) away, which significantly exceeds the range of other similar weapons currently in use. The AIM-424 “Malice” missile, developed by Raytheon (a subsidiary of RTX), is roughly the same size as the current AIM-120 “Advanced Medium-Range Air-to-Air Missile.” This means that the missile can be fitted into the internal weapon bays of F-35 and F-22 stealth fighters. Peter Layton, a former officer of the Royal Australian Air Force and visiting scholar at the Griffith Asia Institute, stated that although missiles with such a range can be used to strike high-value aerial targets such as command aircraft or refueling tanks, they may be even more valuable in defending ships.
