US Treasury Yield News: Bessent's Actions Against Iran Put Bonds Under Pressure
2026-08-25 09:07:04
According to CoinMeta, U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Branson is set to provide detailed explanations regarding new sanctions against Iran on August 24th. This announcement has drawn significant attention to U.S. Treasury yields, which have remained at high levels for several years. Reuters reports that the yield on 30-year Treasury bonds approached 5.2518% on Monday, close to the 19-year high of 5.3371%. The Treasury Department also plans to double the amount of securities it will purchase with maturities ranging from 10 to 30 years, raising the maximum limit from $2 billion to at least $4 billion. Branson's announcement regarding Iran has added uncertainty to the bond market, as Iran has threatened to retaliate against countries that support Washington's economic restrictions. Before the announcement, oil prices initially fell; Brent crude oil was trading at $93.07 per barrel, a decrease of 1.4%. Bitcoin was trading around $77,298 on Monday, benefiting from a weaker U.S. dollar and a shift in risk appetite. Higher Treasury yields may increase the opportunity cost of holding non-yielding assets, and the market is facing two competing forces.
