According to CoinMeta, Bithumb won the first of four civil lawsuits aimed at recovering Bitcoin earnings that were mistakenly credited to customers' accounts during a promotional campaign in February. On August 27, Judge Kim Yoo-sung of the Seoul Central District Court ruled in favor of Bithumb and ordered the defendant to return approximately 194 million Korean won as unjust enrichment. Bithumb filed civil claims against four users in March, accusing them of selling the mistakenly credited Bitcoin and keeping the resulting cash. The amount claimed in this case is the second largest; the remaining claim amounts are about 500 million Korean won, 14.8 million Korean won, and 5 million Korean won, respectively. During an event on February 6, Bithumb planned to distribute rewards worth 620,000 Korean won, but due to employees choosing Bitcoin as the unit of payment, the internal system mistakenly credited 620,000 BTC to the users' accounts. The company identified the error 20 minutes later and began to prevent transactions and withdrawals 15 minutes after that. Some users sold the mistakenly credited Bitcoin before the control measures took effect, causing the price of Bithumb to briefly drop by about 17%.
