The US Department of Justice plans to restart capture courts in order to seize Iranian oil tankers

According to CoinMeta, the U.S. Department of Justice is preparing to restart the operations of the Capture Tribunal in order to simplify the process of seizing Iranian oil tankers and related goods, thereby strengthening the maritime blockade against Iran. The DOJ is coordinating with the Department of Defense to advance this plan, allowing federal prosecutors to more quickly designate goods such as oil on enemy or neutral vessels as "U.S. assets." These goods can then be sold, and the proceeds will be transferred to the U.S. Treasury Department. Restarting the Capture Tribunal will simplify the procedures for the U.S. to seize and sell oil tankers and other goods, but it also faces legal and operational challenges. Currently, the U.S. Department of Justice is considering initiating these procedures at the Federal District Court for the Southern District of Texas.
