According to CoinMeta, gold mining stocks saw a significant increase in August, with gains exceeding those of chip stocks in any single month in recent years. The global gold mining stock index has risen by 43% this month, on track to set a record for the largest monthly increase. In contrast, the global semiconductor index and the Philadelphia Semiconductor Index recorded their best single-month performance of the year in April, with increases of 27% and 38%, respectively. Earlier this month, the U.S. Treasury Department's unexpected announcement to expand bond repurchases and lower borrowing costs fueled this upward trend. The head of equity investments at UBS Switzerland, Tomasz Godziek, stated that from an investment perspective in stocks, gold is one of the sectors they are most overweight in. He is optimistic about the investment logic behind the depreciation of the dollar and believes that gold is a strategic asset that central banks around the world can use to diversify their reserves. At the same time, rising global bond yields and doubts about whether massive investments in artificial intelligence will yield returns are putting pressure on tech stocks.
