Mexico returns to the Samurai Bond market after a two-year hiatus, issuing 282.8 billion yen in bonds

According to CoinMeta, Mexico returned to the Samurai bond market for the first time in two years on Friday, successfully issuing 282.8 billion yen in bonds. As borrowers seek to lock in financing costs before Japanese interest rates may rise further, there is a surge in Samurai bond issuance. The terms of these newly issued bonds range from 3.5 years to 20 years, with a spread of 115 to 210 basis points over the benchmark Japanese yen swap rate. Mexico's last Samurai bond issuance was in August 2024, when it raised 152.2 billion yen. Overseas issuers are increasingly utilizing the Samurai bond market to reach Japan's vast investor base. For investors, Samurai bonds remain attractive because issuers usually offer higher spreads than comparable domestic Japanese bonds.
