Isabel Schnabel: Central banks should promote tokenization; stablecoins cannot replace central bank reserve settlements
2026-08-29 10:25:29
According to CoinMeta, Isabel Schnabel, a member of the Executive Board of the European Central Bank (ECB), stated at the Jackson Hole Symposium that tokenization can bring about atomic settlement and programmability, which helps to reduce cross-border repurchase settlement risks and integrate the financial infrastructure of the eurozone. She emphasized that stablecoins lack flexible liquidity supply and cannot replace central bank reserves as ultimate settlement assets during times of stress, and should be regarded as regulated supplementary payment tools. Schnabel advocates that central banks should issue tokenized reserves natively on distributed ledgers. The ECB is advancing project appia project pontes, and exploring the synchronization of target services with DLT platforms to achieve native tokenization based on central bank currency and 24/7 operation.
