BIS: Stablecoins Not Yet Ready for Daily Payments
2026-08-29 20:29:52
According to CoinMeta, the Bank for International Settlements (BIS) has warned that stablecoins are not yet suitable for large-scale daily payments. The CEO of BIS, Agustín Carstens, pointed out that stablecoins have shortcomings in terms of interoperability, inconsistent anti-money laundering controls, and risks to bank funds, and argued that tokenized deposits provide a more direct digital payment method. As regulators examine the operations of stablecoin issuers, discussions about stablecoins have gone beyond their value maintenance capabilities, and policymakers are exploring the deeper applications of these assets in payments, banking, and national monetary systems. BIS emphasized the regulatory differences between banks and non-bank stablecoin issuers; current stablecoin regulations mainly focus on issuance, redemption, and reserve management. Banks, having already operated under prudential supervision, enjoy greater flexibility, while non-bank issuers may face stricter restrictions on lending, collateralization, and custody. BIS also noted that the widespread adoption of stablecoins could weaken the monetary authority of certain regions and affect the effectiveness of local monetary policies.
