Sandbox Bridge Vulnerability: 3.29 million SAND Coins Were Minted, with $675,000 Stolen
2026-08-30 14:52:40
According to CoinMeta, a vulnerability was discovered in the Sandbox bridge. Attackers exploited configuration flaws in the Base and BNB smart chains to mint 3.29 million SAND tokens and stole approximately $675,000 from an Ethereum wallet. Although the reported face value was $49 billion, the actual loss was much lower than that. The attackers launched their attack on the night of August 21st through the SAND token contract of Sandbox, and within five hours, they distributed the minted SAND tokens across 173 wallets. Security firm PeckShield was the first to detect this activity, but by the time the Sandbox team responded, the attackers had already withdrawn the available funds and fled. The Sandbox team confirmed that the SAND tokens on Ethereum and Polygon were not affected, and no user wallets were compromised. The impact of this incident is estimated to be less than 0.01% of the total supply of SAND.
