According to CoinMeta, Sberbank Vice Chairman of Russia, Anatoly Popov, stated on August 28th that the bank plans to expand its crypto mortgage business by accepting Bitcoin, Ethereum, and Tether’s USDT as collateral. However, this proposal is still conditional; Sberbank will only allow for the use of ETH and USDT once the Russian Central Bank permits their public circulation. No start date, loan terms, or eligible customer groups have been announced yet. Popov mentioned that the bank is prepared for regulatory changes and has accumulated practical experience in dealing with cryptocurrencies. The bank plans to modify its existing products after the new framework takes effect. The new statement extends the previous interest in issuing crypto loans denominated in rubles. According to the regulations of the Russian Central Bank, the new crypto framework will come into effect on September 1, 2026, at which time eligible and non-eligible investors will be able to conduct crypto transactions through approved intermediaries.
