According to CoinMeta, on August 26, FBI and the Australian police filed charges against two men from Western Australia in connection with a joint investigation into the TeamPCP cybercrime gang. The Australian Federal Police laid 14 charges against 21-year-old Ruben Ian Thomson and 23-year-old Louis Michael Gabler. The two appeared in the Perth Magistrates' Court on August 27. The police alleged that the gang invaded over 1,000 organizations, obtained more than 500,000 credentials, and deleted at least 300GB of data. The investigation began in April and was based on information provided by several cybersecurity companies, which alleged that the gang inserted malicious code into open-source software. Australian authorities estimate that the total cost for affected organizations to restore their systems amounted to hundreds of millions of Australian dollars. Thomson faces charges worth at least 100,000 Australian dollars and could be sentenced to up to 20 years in prison. The U.S. Department of Justice has also filed federal charges against Thomson, accusing him of violations of computer fraud and abuse of laws.
