AI Demand Boosts South Korea's August Exports; The Central Bank's Hawkish Stance Supported by Data

According to CoinMeta, data released by South Korean customs on Tuesday showed that driven by demand for artificial intelligence, South Korea's exports continued to grow strongly in August, with a year-on-year increase of 72.5% after adjusting for working days, and imports increased by 22.5%, resulting in a trade surplus of $34.7 billion. Exports before adjusting for working days rose by 68.7% year-on-year, higher than the revised 63% increase in July. Semiconductors continued to be the main driver of export growth. These figures indicate that despite rising energy prices and geopolitical tensions putting pressure on other industries, external demand remains resilient, further supporting the decision by South Korea's central bank to raise its benchmark interest rate by 25 basis points for the second consecutive time last week.
