According to CoinMeta, the U.S. Internal Revenue Service (IRS) saw a 35% decline in audit revenue for the fiscal year 2025, dropping to $6.5 billion, which is a 35% reduction from $10 billion the previous year. This change is closely related to the IRS' layoff measures; the number of employees in the audit and collection departments decreased from 27,217 in fiscal year 2024 to 19,612, and it is expected that by January 2026, the workforce will further shrink to 17,517. Audit activities were significantly affected, with the number of individual audits declining by 30% in fiscal year 2025, and the number of audits for high-income taxpayers also decreased by 27%.
