EU regulators warn: Quantum threats may emerge before they become commercially viable

According to CoinMeta, European financial regulators have warned that advanced quantum computers could undermine the cryptography used to secure blockchain systems, and the threat may emerge before such technology becomes commercially viable. According to the autumn risk and vulnerability report by the Joint Committee of European Supervisory Authorities (ECB, ESMA, and EBA), approximately 6.9 million bitcoins (valued at around $586 billion) are currently at risk. The report indicates that quantum computers could break certain cryptographic systems widely used to protect communications, transactions, databases, and blockchains. Although the report does not mention when quantum computing will become commercially viable, a recent report suggests that it is expected to be ready for use within four years.
