Bitcoin mining companies are accelerating their shift to AI and HPC; mining profits are under pressure
2026-09-25 11:29:53
According to CoinMeta, Bitcoin mining companies are shifting their resources towards AI data centers and high-performance computing (HPC) due to narrowing mining profits. The hash price is approaching $33 per PH/s, the network computing power has exceeded 1000 EH/s, and the revenue per unit of computing power has decreased. The annualized return on computing power leasing is about $1.5 million per megawatt, which is about three times that of Bitcoin mining at $500,000 per megawatt. Core Scientific has paid approximately $42 million to cancel orders for new generation mining machines, while Keel and Cipher are selling some of their BTC reserves to finance the construction of AI. Iren will stop mining in December 2026, and it is expected that 35 EH/s of computing power will withdraw from listed mining companies within the year. The stock price of Core Scientific (CORZ) is about $16.54, a year-on-year increase of about 90%.
