South Korea's excess tax revenue is expected to exceed 50 trillion Korean won

According to CoinMeta, South Korea's excess tax revenue this year is expected to exceed 50 trillion Korean won (about $37 billion), reflecting factors such as a semiconductor industry cycle that is stronger than anticipated. Based on calculations by Yonhap News, this could result in a future contingency fund exceeding 200 trillion Korean won. The Ministry of Economy and Finance is expected to announce this figure in the revised national tax revenue forecast for 2026, which will be released later this month. This unexpected windfall will give the government more room to increase spending without the need to correspondingly increase borrowing. According to the 2027 budget proposal, most of this surplus revenue from the semiconductor industry will be used to fund artificial intelligence, chips, and youth development, while also limiting bond issuance and establishing a fiscal buffer.
