The Quantum Problem of Bitcoin: Three Solutions Proposed by Researchers
2026-09-27 23:02:20
According to CoinMeta, reports by Decrypt have once again drawn attention to the concerns that quantum computers may be able to crack Bitcoin in the near future. This week, there have been three developments: a breakthrough in cost, new privacy designs, and storage solutions. Bitcoin uses elliptic curve cryptography to protect wallets, and in theory, quantum computers could derive private keys through the Shor algorithm, leading to wallet theft. Although there are no quantum computers available yet, the expected timeline is getting shorter, so preparations are accelerating. There are three main types of solutions: The first is to make quantum-resistant transactions possible under Bitcoin's existing rules. Starkware mined the first quantum-safe Bitcoin transaction on the mainnet last month, stating that through an open competition, the construction cost was reduced from about $320 to about $67. The second type is protocol upgrades to adopt post-quantum signatures for Bitcoin, but due to decentralized governance, such upgrades will take many years. The third type is defense at the storage level. The cryptography lead at Coinbase explained this week how the exchange plans to build post-quantum storage to adapt to the signature schemes that Bitcoin may adopt in the future. In summary, the "quantum day" is still a hypothesis, and there are currently no measures that can make Bitcoin independent of quantum threats.
