Apollo: AI May Trigger Large-Scale Outflow of Deposits from US Banks
2026-09-28 04:21:46
According to CoinMeta, Apollo Global Management Chief Economist Torsten Slok warns that AI financial assistants could lead to a large-scale outflow of deposits from American banks. He pointed out that intelligent assistants like Muse might automatically transfer family bank balances to higher-yielding accounts, which could trigger what is known as a "proxy bank run." Data from Slok shows that current interest rates on some fintech and online deposit products are as high as 5.0%, while the national average interest rate for checking accounts in the United States is only 0.1%. He stated that if families widely adopt these AI assistants, banks could lose a significant amount of their low-cost deposits, which would have an impact on the entire financial system.
