SEC Approves Tesla's New Retail Voting System, Changing the Voting Method for Small Shareholders
2026-09-30 02:11:09
CoinMeta US stock news: The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) has approved Tesla's new retail voting system. Small shareholders can register once to allow their shares to vote at each meeting alongside the board of directors. The SEC approved the plan on Tuesday. CEO Vlad Tenev stated that this is exactly how ownership should be. Tesla wants small shareholders to vote because in 2025, retail investors only voted for 28% of the shares, while institutions voted for 76.6%. Tesla mentioned that in the past two annual meetings, over $2 million was spent on agents who encouraged voting. The approval of the plan came in the form of a no-action letter, with the SEC promising not to recommend enforcement action if Tesla follows its plans. Once investors choose to join, their shares will vote according to the board of directors' recommendations at each meeting; they will still receive voting packets and can override any single vote or withdraw at any time. Tesla is required to send reminders annually. Investors can also opt to exclude controversial board elections and mergers from the automatic voting process.
