OpenAI Supports California's Enhanced AI Security Regulations
2026-10-22 07:50:06
According to CoinMeta, as reported by The Information, a senior official from OpenAI stated in a letter to California Governor Gavin Newsom that the company supports the requirement for artificial intelligence (AI) companies to implement shutdown mechanisms for their models, undergo mandatory annual independent audits, and adopt stricter cybersecurity measures. The letter was signed by Chan Park, who is responsible for policy and cooperation matters in the United States and Canada at OpenAI. In the letter, it is mentioned that OpenAI "suggests strengthening the SB53 legislation." This legislation is the current AI transparency law passed by California in 2025, which currently requires leading AI companies to disclose security frameworks and transparency reports, as well as report on major security incidents. In addition, OpenAI also supports the introduction of regulations that require companies' "security frameworks to explicitly cover the capability of automated AI research and development using cutting-edge models."
