TSMC plans to replace Chinese rare earth components to manufacture AI chips
2026-10-23 05:22:17
According to CoinMeta, TSMC ( TSMC ) is exploring alternatives to Chinese rare earth components in order to cope with the threats posed by China's export controls on the semiconductor supply chain. The company is considering using rare earth-free motors to power its chip manufacturing equipment in an effort to reduce its dependence on these export controls. According to Reuters, TSMC has already contacted equipment suppliers to discuss alternatives that do not require rare earth magnets. Although this effort is still in its preliminary stages, TSMC has not yet introduced this technology into its manufacturing network. Rare earth magnets play a crucial role in industrial motors, especially in devices that require precise movement and efficient design. TSMC's production capacity is vital to the artificial intelligence industry, and it is expected that revenue for the fourth quarter will be between $52.3 billion and $54.3 billion.
