According to CoinMeta, and as reported by The Wall Street Journal, Elon Musk's restrictions on Ukraine's use of the Starlink communication network have prompted American allies to accelerate their search for alternative solutions. Starlink is crucial for Ukraine's defense against Russian attacks, and Europe is concerned about this, as the system has a "master switch" that gives Musk the authority to shut down the network without consultation. Polish Foreign Minister Sikorski stated on social media to Musk, "The more you involve your products in politics, the more you will damage your brand." The Polish government is participating in funding Ukraine's use of this system. Ukraine and Finland announced that as part of a 300 million euro aid plan, Kiev will join a satellite communication network jointly operated by Finnish satellite operator ICEYE and Nokia. Canada's Telesat proposed a "Low Earth Orbit Satellite Network" solution called Lightspeed, emphasizing higher sovereignty and independence. The European Union signed contracts with Eutelsat and two other companies to build a "sovereign satellite network" consisting of 348 satellites, IRIS², with the project costing approximately 17.5 billion US dollars, and the first batch of satellites is scheduled to be launched in 2029.
