Michael Burry: The market may repeat the bear market of 2000

According to CoinMeta, renowned investor Michael Burry is preparing for the next bear market. He pointed out that among the 982 record closes of the S&P 500 index since 1980, the situations on October 6, 2026, and March 2000 were the closest. In March 2000, only 18% of S&P 500 stocks were within 10% of their 10-year highs, 71% of the stocks had entered a bear market with declines of over 20%, and only 15 stocks set new highs. In the following year, stocks near their highs lost about a third of their value, while those that were under pressure rose. The S&P 500 index fell by 49% in October 2002. On October 6, 2026, however, only 19% of the stocks were within 10% of their 10-year highs, 55% had entered a bear market, and there were still 15 stocks that set new highs. Burry believes that the market may fail by boosting the stocks that are under pressure, and he has noticed an increase in investment by large tech companies in AI, as well as signs of tension in the private equity and private lending sectors. If this is indeed a repeat of 2000, Burry believes that the stocks that are under pressure today could become safe havens.
