Canada plans to allow stablecoins for consumption rewards, but prohibits holding for earnings
2026-10-27 19:58:23
CoinMeta data: The Canadian government has proposed a stablecoin regulation that allows issuers to offer rewards for payments, but prohibits paying yields to users who hold stablecoins. The draft was released on October 24th, and the public comment period ends on December 23rd. Consumers can receive rebates by making payments to merchants using Canadian-regulated stablecoins, but no issuer may promise an annual return merely because a user holds those stablecoins within their application. The draft also requires non-bank issuers to maintain reserves with Canadian financial institutions, and a 60-day public consultation period is currently in progress.
