CFTC Sues Utah for Blocking Restrictions on Predictive Markets
2026-10-28 17:46:02
According to CoinMeta, the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) announced on October 27 that it had filed a lawsuit against Utah in an attempt to prevent the state from shutting down registered forecasting markets. Utah's legal measures conflict with decisions made by Congress and hinder federal regulation of these markets, stated CFTC Commissioner Michael Selliger. Utah's actions aim to shut down forecasting markets that are not only used for hedging and investment but also provide the public with information about future events. The CFTC also noted that Utah's actions will limit the operations of registered exchanges. This case involves ten states, and relevant documents have been submitted to four federal appeals courts and one state supreme court.
