According to CoinMeta, and based on the "2026 Crypto Geography Report" published by blockchain analytics firm Chainalysis, Sub-Saharan Africa may be the smallest crypto market in the world, but it became the fastest-growing region globally between July 2025 and June 2026, with an annual growth rate of 13.4%, reaching a total size of 101 billion US dollars. South Africa and Nigeria together accounted for more than three-quarters of the region's trading volume. In South Africa, the crypto economy surged by 52% to 39.3 billion US dollars, with strong growth in commercial payment scenarios and cross-border stablecoin transactions, making it a regional crypto hub connecting neighboring countries. Nigeria's crypto market reached 38.1 billion US dollars, ranking third in global grassroots adoption rates. Local trading platforms managed to absorb half of the inflow from the country's centralized exchanges despite changes in regulatory environment, and Bitcoin accounted for as high as 92% of small-value P2P transfers.
