According to CoinMeta, Yi He, co-CEO of Binance, stated that the exchange expects to resume withdrawal services within the next 48 hours, and deposit services will operate normally. This announcement was made after Binance suspended deposits and withdrawals as it was investigating what could be the largest crypto hacking incident in history. The exchange estimates that this incident affected approximately $6.3 billion, while Chainalysis refers to it as $6.4 billion. Binance has collaborated with blockchain partners to freeze about $3 billion in affected funds and has pledged that all losses will be covered by the user safety asset fund (SAFU) and company funds. Preliminary investigation results indicate that it is possible that a laptop belonging to an engineer from DevOps was compromised, and the hackers used that device to initiate unauthorized withdrawal transactions. Binance has revoked the authorization of the compromised addresses and is cooperating with law enforcement agencies to track the stolen funds. Chainalysis believes that this attack may be related to the North Korean hacking group TraderTraitor, which has been involved in several major crypto theft incidents.
