Ledger CTO: New Password Threats Trigger Concerns about the Future of Bitcoin
2026-10-31 07:51:22
According to CoinMeta, Ledger's Chief Technology Officer Charles Guillemet issued a warning in a post on October 30th, stating that two new cryptographic breakthroughs have raised concerns about the future of Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies. Researchers from Ruhr University and the Max Planck Institute for Security and Privacy published a new study proposing a sub-exponential time algorithm that could potentially solve the elliptic curve discrete logarithm problem more efficiently. Although this algorithm does not pose a risk to current encryption schemes yet, it serves as a reminder that the resources required to crack common encryption methods are continuously decreasing. Additionally, French quantum computing companies Alice and Bob published a new paper estimating that theoretically, less than 30,000 physical qubits could be used to crack Bitcoin's secp256k1 encryption in about an hour. Although these figures are estimates for advanced fault-tolerant quantum computers that do not yet exist, they highlight the potential threat of quantum computing attacks.
