According to CoinMeta, S&P warns that AI spending could put Meta, one of the world's most profitable companies, at risk of a credit rating downgrade. The rating agency has downgraded its outlook on Meta to negative, making it the first of the four major tech companies to be affected by such spending. S&P expects Meta to burn through $71 billion in cash by 2027, with capital expenditures exceeding $225 billion, which is $62 billion more than previously estimated. The agency stated that Meta's debt may exceed the downgrade threshold after new leases begin in 2028. S&P took a similar action against Oracle in July 2025 and downgraded its rating to just above junk bond status a year later. In July, Moody's also warned that unprecedented AI spending threatened the credit quality of large tech companies.
